Hot Chocolate Breakfast Smoothie & One Exciting Announcement

Recipe Card Icon_edited-2It’s a marshmallow white, wintery wonderland lately, which I for one am obsessed with.  Isn’t there something just so festive about living in a real-life snow globe? I personally think everything appears a little brighter when looking through snowflake covered eyelashes. But let’s get real here; with the combination of Old Man Winter’s bite and Santa Claus’ imminent arrival, one cannot be expected to kick-start their morning with any old brekky. This time of year calls for something festive and fun, yet warm and cozy. Like Christmas PJs, but in breakfast form.

I have voiced my concerns before over the consumption of frosty smoothies during the cold winter months, but just to be clear, I do love my blended concoctions. They are fast to make and contain a whole bunch of healthy, filling ingredients to get me through all the last minute holiday errands (sans the ‘hanger’ I might add). So what’s a girl to do? Trade a few degrees of core body temperature for an easy breakfast? Don’t be silly. Let’s just make the smoothie warm… like soup, only with breakfast-type ingredients. Blended goodness in a warm and cozy form; like I said, Christmas PJs in a mug!

Hot chocolate was where my head was at with this brew. It really is the obvious choice, what with my festive mood and all, but sugar crystals and powdered cocoa aren’t really going to sustain anyone’s day for very long. Plus, let’s not forget this is breakfast we are taking about… it needs protein, fats and lots and lots of nutrients to ensure our day starts out on the right foot.

Lucky for me, a healthy hot chocolate is super easy to make and allows for the addition of a few good breakfast staples to up its staying power. To begin, cocoa (when you pick the good stuff) is rich in magnesium, and ram-jammed with lots of phytonutrients that have been linked to reducing your risk of developing cardiovascular disease, improving insulin sensitivity, and protecting your skin from UV damage. Next, the addition of hemp hearts and chia seeds increase the protein content, and provide a good dose of omega-3s and soluble fibre which will keep your belly full and happy all day long. Add a few dates for sweetness, a little cinnamon and maca for some added superfood mojo, blend it all together and you have one thick and creamy AM delight.

Now before I sign off on a chocolaty high, I wanted to take a moment and share some exciting news…. Starting this month, I will be writing for the amazing site Tuja Wellness!! Have you checked it out? If you love all things wellness, you need to ASAP. From amazing city guides (geared towards the holistic nuts like myself), to product reviews (this one by me!), to sweet tips on how to make your life a little healthier, this site has you covered.  Stay tuned for articles from yours truly, and be sure to check out the site regularly for a little dose of wellness love.

I am beyond excited to be working with Tuja and of course for breakfast.
